[VIDEO] Sheryl Crow & Dr. Albright on tv about early detection for breast cancer

WDIV Local 4 - 26 September 2018 - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and while most women are aware family history plays a large part in whether a woman will develop breast cancer, there are other factors too. Grammy award-winning artist and breast cancer survivor Sheryl Crow is lending her voice to help educate women on why they need to make breast cancer screening a priority.

Crow spoke to Tati Amare about her mission, along with Dr. DaCarla Albright. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, Crow said she went from thinking she was a picture of health to survival mode and it redefined her life. She said she is a living testament that early detection works. Crow said the ways breast cancer can be detected have evolved since she was first diagnosed, with developments such as 3D picture mammography.

She also brought to light how 3D imaging helps improve detecting cancer in dense tissue. Dr. Albright said over half of women ages 40- 74 have dense breasts and there are no signs or symptoms. Dense breasts are made up of more fibrous and glandular tissues and cancer can often be misread on a mammogram as just density in the breast.

Dr. Albright recommends 3D mammography to prevent misdiagnosis and early detection. Crow and Dr. Albright encourage women to get a mammogram at age 40.

"I'm 56, I'm a woman and I've got a song on the radio!" declared Sheryl Crow triumphantly near the start of her set Saturday afternoon, referencing her latest single "Wouldn't Want To Be Like You." From a rumored forthcoming duets album, the single takes on a culture where the truth often takes a back seat and features indie-pop songstress Annie Clark in her guise as St. Vincent.

Crow and her six-piece backing band tackled that one sans Clark during a set full of 90s power. It's incredible just how many hits Crow, referencing John Lennon in a t-shirt bearing the words "We all shine on," has amassed since her 1993 debut. She wasted no time getting to them either, opening with "If it Makes You Happy" and moving promptly through "Every Day is a Winding Road," "All I Wanna Do," "My Favorite Mistake" and "Can't Cry Anymore" next.

"I've got two little boys that I'm raising and I keep saying the best of times are ahead of us," said Crow, referencing Lennon on a cover of The Beatles' "I've Got a Feeling" before closing her set in a positive fashion with "I Shall Believe."

[NEWS] Sheryl added to Reese Witherspoon's Louisville appearance

By Kirby Adams
Louisville Courier Journal

Add a Grammy award-winning musician to that cup of tea, please.

Nine-time Grammy Award recipient Sheryl Crow will be asking the questions during actress Reese Witherspoon's "Whiskey in a Teacup" book tour this month at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.

Reese, one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, is bringing her buzzed-about book tour to Louisville, and it's all about growing up in the South.

Crow, who just happens to be in Louisville the same weekend to perform at the Bourbon and Beyond Festival Sept. 22 will chat with Reese the night before, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Whitney Hall. (FYI: general admission tickets start for Bourbon & Beyond start at $110).

"Whiskey in a Teacup" is part memoir, part recipe and entertaining manual for how to party like a Southerner. The eight-city tour, fittingly, hits mostly Southern cities. Witherspoon spent most of her childhood further down Interstate 65 in Nashville.

"My Southern heritage informs my whole life, and spreading the gospel of Southern living has become sort of an obsession of mine. I bring the South everywhere I go with bluegrass, big holiday parties, and plenty of Dorothea’s fried chicken," she wrote. (Dorothea is her mom, BTW.)
