[...] At her first Farm Aid in thirteen years, Sheryl Crow concentrated on trusted hits like "Everyday Is a Winding Road" and "My Favorite Mistake" before inviting out Willie Nelson, Lukas Nelson, Jack Johnson and Margo Price for "Midnight Rider" as a tribute to the late Gregg Allman. Her brief foray into the world of country may not have generated any big hits, but she fits seamlessly into this world and remains a stellar performer. [...]

This summer, Willie Nelson has been headlining the Outlaw Music Festival tour with several of the artists who also joined the Farm Aid bill: Crow, Rateliff, Price, the Avett Brothers, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real. As a result, even by Farm Aid’s high standards, this was a year of magnificent musical collaborations.

With new political winds blowing across the nation’s farm fields, Farm Aid’s musicians, in conversations backstage, spoke of both their concerns and their optimism.

“The major thing where I feel there is a chasm is in the [lack of] belief in science,” Crow said. “It’s not just going to affect farmers, it’s going to affect everything and everyone. If you have a government that is not supporting science, then it’s really not supporting its people

“The great hope, really,” she continued, “is that, on a state level and even on a city level, there is a lot that can be done that doesn’t rely on the [federal] government."

"Seeing Sheryl Crow hit a stage just after 7 p.m. is a rare occurrence these days, especially for a someone who has eight top-10 albums to her name. Crow's set was strong early on with hits from her 1990s run, including "Everyday Is a Winding Road" and "My Favorite Mistake."

Sheryl Crow has always been so effortlessly cool, and her greeting to Hershey fans was no exception.

Rather than “waste time” worrying about technical difficulties, she said, she’d rather roll with the punches and get the music started.

“But y’all can hang, can’t you?” Crow asked the crowd.

Crow performed classic hits like “Everyday is a Winding Road” and “If It Makes You Happy,” as well as newer songs like “Be Myself” and “Long Way Back.”

She brought Margo Price up for a duet of “Strong Enough” and ended with an energetic rendition of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Night Rider” with Price and Lukas Nelson.

A returning act to the Outlaw Festival, female rocker Sheryl Crow performed a mostly hit-saturated set, although it was continuously marred by sound issues including blown-out stage monitors. Always a professional performer, Crow delighted with spirited renditions of fan favorites like “Can’t Cry Anymore,” “Every Day Is a Winding Road,” and “My Favorite Mistake.”

Rather than just play all the hits, Crow delivered two cuts from her recently released album “Be Myself,” including the album’s namesake and the self-reflective “Long Way Back.” Margo Price emerged to share vocal duties on Crow’s ’90s love ballad “Strong Enough” which proved to be a set highlight. The popular “If It Makes You Happy” led into Crow tipping her hat to one of music’s original outlaws, the late Gregg Allman. A bluesy interpretation of the Allman Brothers Band staple “Midnight Rider” had Lukas Nelson and Price helping to bring the hour-long set to a strong close.

The Morning Call

Sheryl Crow’s 50-minute, 10-song set succeeded mostly because she loaded it with hits, offering early the hit “Everyday is a Winding Road,” a great song, though Crow under-sang it, then a better “My Favorite Mistake.”“Be Myself,” the title track to her new album, was OK, as was the also-new “The Long Way Back Home.”

“The Best of Times” (which she dedicated to Florida and Texas hurricane victims) had her paying harmonica that got a big hand. It was interesting that Crow brought out Price to sing with her on “Strong Enough,” but ceded too much of the song to her.

Crow closed with a good reading of her hit “If It Makes You Happy,” then brought out Lukas Nelson and Price for a great version of The Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider,” on which Lukas Nelson again stole the show – absolutely killing the vocal and channeling Gregg Allman. And he traded guitar licks with Crow’s axman.

REVIEW

By Tayhlor Stephenson
http://mtsusidelines.com

Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow completely met her astronomical crowd’s expectations with a spunky jog onto stage and theatrical rendition of her 1996 hit “Everyday Is a Winding Road” off her self-titled album, “Sheryl Crow.”

She smoothly transitioned into crowd-favorites “All I Wanna Do” and “My Favorite Mistake” before the crowd roared with an immersive chant of “Thank you, Sheryl” in appreciation of Crow’s commitment to rescheduling the highly anticipated headlining show.

She captivated her audience with hits the crowd treated as sing-a-longs. By the time she reached the midway point of her set with a performance of “Can’t Cry Anymore,” Crow yodeled until she couldn’t yodel anymore. She topped the performance off with an impressively long, in-tune note at the end of the song.

The fun wouldn’t soon end, though.

Crow led an impressive, hyped-up instrumental, which included an intense harmonica solo by Crow, with wicked light effects, all of which was complimented by the heavy beat of the drums to keep the audience on their feet.

“What about this band, everybody?” Crow asked before transitioning into Grammy Award-winning “If It Makes You Happy.”

To wrap up her headlining gig, Crow gave her Texas fans some love.

“This is in honor of all those people in Texas and the sun coming out finally” Crow said in an introduction to her 2002 hit “Soak Up the Sun,” originally found on her 2002 album, “C’Mon C’Mon.”

As Crow’s set slowed down, her fans did not. They demanded a two-track encore from her, including a production of “I Shall Believe.”

Crow, along with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors and Shel, made next year’s show one to look forward to.
