[NEWS] FRANCES PRESTON HONORED BY COUNTRY STARS
- Left: Preston with her grandson Taylor Preston, and Sheryl; Right: Preston with Sam Moore (wow!)
Pictures by Kay Williams
Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow and Brenda Lee led a long list of celebrities and music industry executives who gathered Tuesday night (Sept. 18) as Country Music Hall of Fame member Frances Preston was honored with the Leadership Music Dale Franklin Award. Leadership Music is a Nashville-based organization dedicated to greater communication and education within the music industry, and the award recognizes Preston's contributions to the music industry throughout her career. Now retired, Preston served as president and CEO of BMI from 1986 until 2004 after joining the performance rights organization in 1958 and opening its regional office in Nashville. Gill hosted the sold-out event at Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center that also featured appearances by Alabama lead vocalist Randy Owen, Sam Moore and Gary Morris, along with video messages from Dolly Parton, Al Gore and music executive Clive Davis.
Sheryl Crow recalled how supportive the honoree was when she was diagnosed with cancer, then rocked the house with “If It Makes You Happy,” “Strong Enough” and “All I Wanna Do.”
“Frances personifies an angel among us,” said Sheryl.
Where: Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Nashville, Tennessee (USA)
Host: Vince Gill,
Performing: Sheryl Crow, Sam Moore, Steve Cropper, Randy Owen, Gary Morris, Oak Ridge Boys, Greg Colson, Eddie Bayers (Band Leader) and other special guests.
Net proceeds from the Leadership Music Dale Franklin Award evening will benefit Leadership Music and the Frances Williams Preston Laboratories.

[NEWS] CATCHING UP WITH SHERYL CROW
The next album from hitmaker Sheryl Crow won't be in stores until February but a source close to her reveals to OK!, "It's a lot different than her previous work. Where Sheryl's last album was very safe and geared for Top 40, she takes more risks on this one and it's a lot more raw."
And health-wise, Sheryl, who successfully battled breast cancer in Feb. 2006, is "doing great!" So what is the 45-year-old's secret to staying fit? "She doesn't work out. She's naturally fit. Maybe she goes running sometimes, but Sheryl's not hitting the gym and lifting weights or anything, she's just one of those people that's almost shaking her foot or moving something and blessed with a high metabolism."

[NEWS - ITA] VH1 SU SKY

NEWS FROM TIM SMITH
18 set 2007 end of summer
Hello there friends,
I hope everyone has had a good a lovely time in the sunshine. The Atlanta heat has backed off to crisp mornings...I am leaving for Nashville today to play with Peter and Sheryl for a private event..We are all hoping to be back out on tour at some point, but until the new record is done and released, don't know when that might be.
With as much time off as we have had, I have been in full contemplation mode. All I can say is things are out of whack in our world right now, so hold on to those you know so close..I've been lacking in faith in lots of things lately, but for those of you who really do know me, all good and happiness to you..tim
Well Tim, all the best to you, Peter, Sheryl, Mike and Jeremy!

Billie Jean Burger King chauvinist pig pen
King gave private lessons to Sheryl Crow and her dad, Wendell, for a 75th birthday present at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.
Dr. Bill Austin and his wife, Tani, who run the Starkey Hearing Foundation, also put in a winning bid for tennis lessons during the Women's Sports Foundation's annual awards dinner last fall. Since each offered the highest bid, King decided to give lessons to both parties at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
"Sheryl Crow and her father, Wendell, are real athletes and great fans of tennis," King said. "Wendell is a solid player and even aced me."
Crow's nephews joined in the fun, working as ball boys. The singer is a board member of the Women's Sports Foundation, which will hold its 28th annual awards dinner on Oct. 15.

ON THE SHERYL SCENE...Sheryl is hard at work writing and recording for her next album. The songs I've heard so far are absolutely brilliant. She hopes to have it completed and released early next year.
We had a short 10-day tour last month - which served more as a vacation - with shows in the midwest. Sheryl was a guest for Eric Clapton's Crossroads Concert in Chicago and I was fortunate enough to join in along with Vince Gill and his band. We performed "Happy", "Strong Enough" - with Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas joining in - and "Tulsa Time", Danny Flower's penned classic made famous by Don Williams and Eric in the 70's. For Tulsa Time, to my left - Jerry Douglas, to my right - Vince Gill, Sheryl, Eric Clapton & Albert Lee. Quite an honor to be up there with such a cast. Overall, the Crossroads event was an incredible success with historic moments and performances. Jeff Beck retains his living rock god status in this day and age where none no longer exist. Steve Winwood performed a Blind Faith set with Eric and his band - An emotional moment for me as the Blind Faith record was one of the first I ever owned. Steve reminded the audience of his guitar legend status with a blistering performance of Traffic's Mr. Fantasy. One of the many other highlights was Johnny Winter playing Highway 61 Revisited with Derek Trucks and his band. The concert was filmed by director Martyn Atkins, known for videos and documentaries including Tom Petty, The Eagles, Sheryl's C'mon America concert DVD, and recently the Cream at Royal Albert Hall Concert DVD. It'll be a "must have" for your rock DVD collection.
For the rest of this year with Sheryl, we'll be playing once or twice a month for private and public events including shows next month in Atlantic City and GIRL FRENZY in Irvine Meadows, CA. I'll list the public concert dates on the calendar.
