[REVIEW] SHINE OVER BABYLON
Ready for more, Sheryl Crow returns with a powerful lead single for upcoming studio set "Detours," out Feb. 5. "Shine Over Babylon" is one of those world-weary ballads for which the Missouri-born songstress is best-known, featuring rootsy guitar leads and rich vocal harmonies, captured in a warm vintage sound that recalls 1993 debut "Tuesday Night Music Club." But Crow takes a huge leap forward as a lyricist, offering angry couplets like "Great highways in a constant melt/Men and women and children all have overbuilt"—a far cry from lightweight radio hits like "Soak Up the Sun" or shiny Revlon commercials. The environmentally conscious, soul-searching single is building at triple A, and its bright chorus will shine at AC and even top 40. —Sven Philipp

Sheryl Crow Moves On, and Makes A Record While Doing So
Written By: Carli Stephens-Rothman
(andPOP) - All she ever wanted to do is have some fun, but these last few years have been anything but for singer and song writer Sheryl Crow.
But, when life gives Sheryl lemons, she either makes lemonade – or a killer record.
Crow has announced that she will be ready to release her album, entitled "Detours", on Feb. 5.
As it turns out, "Detours" is a fitting name for the singer's latest album, as she was forced to make many during the past few years. Only weeks after her devastating split with long-time boyfriend Lance Armstrong in 2006, Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a number of surgeries, the singer successfully recovered from the disease. Then, after spending just over a year alone, the singer adopted a son whom she named Wyatt.
Shortly thereafter, Crow got word that the GirlFrenzy festival that she was slotted to headline had been canceled for unknown reasons.
Like any artist, crow has turned her hardships into gold, as great things are expected of "Detours".
Crow has a number of television appearances scheduled in the next few weeks where she will debut some of the new songs, like "God Bless This Mess", from the album.

[NEWS] HUFFINGTON POST, NOVEMBER 22
Sheryl Crow on motherhood, her politics, her new single and filming in front of the white house
By Michelle Kung
Sheryl Crow has plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. In the last year, the nine-time Grammy winner (and HuffPost blogger) became a mother to adopted son Wyatt, traveled the country on a Stop Global Warming college tour, got up in Karl Rove's grill, and oh yes, finished a new album to be released next February. Crow took a break from mixing to chat about her new single "Shine Over Babylon", her Thanksgiving plans, and how we, as a nation, need to wake up.
What are you up to for Thanksgiving?
I am heading home to Kennett, Missouri, where my whole family is, and I'm sure we're going to overeat. Thanksgiving is actually my favorite holiday; it's so relaxing. There's no hustle and bustle like the Christmas gift bloat, and then I'm heading to New York to do press for this album.
Why did you choose "Shine Over Babylon" as your first single?
Actually, this isn't technically the first single. The record business has changed so drastically -- it's like the Wild West out here -- that the game plan was to get out as much music before the album came out as possible, so people could hear it. This was the first one that I felt should come out because it really speaks to the tone of the record and for me, it has a lot of impact as to what's going on right now. We're going to follow it with three more songs with video on YouTube in the upcoming week.
YouTube, huh? Do people even bother with television now?
As far as I know, MTV and VH1 don't play music videos any more; it's all reality TV and game shows, so I don't know if they'll really pick up a video. To me, it's an interesting time because you used to make a video for a million dollars with a great director. Now, you spend $10,000, if that, with no hair and make-up, and do it completely guerrilla style. For example, we did a song called "God Bless This Mess" about the war and we shot it in front of the White House and nobody stopped us. It's really really exciting to just go out and shoot, like how Bob Dylan shot "Don't Look Back" -- it's just a guy with a camera and you're performing the song.
Did no one care you were recording in front of the White House?
It was almost like I was shape-shifting, honest to god. I couldn't get arrested doing this video. I was even trying -- I mean, is anyone even noticing that I'm singing subversive lyrics right in front of the White House? Goes to show you.
"Shine Over Babylon" isn't necessarily as controversial, but it's certainly eco-conscious. Even though it may sound like an apocalyptic diatribe, I hope people will find a certain modicum of hope in it. It's really more of a battle cry than about being disillusioned.
What issues work you up the most?
The last three years have been very impactful for me, particularly when it comes to politics. Really, even the last six years. My album is called "Detours," and I come back to that theme all the time, because personally... [Crow shifts voices] Hi big boy, my smiley bug, my son just got up... Anyway, I always think of detours as some path that you take away from yourself before it eventually brings you back to remembering who you are. For the last six years, we've been sent on the most massive detour based on fear and misinformation, and we have to really look at our selves in this moment in time -- and it's directly correlated to our lack of passion and our propensity to fall asleep in the face of misinformation -- and just figure out who we are. Personally, the detours I've been on relationship-wise and with my breast cancer, have helped define who I am and who I'm going to be.
I can imagine motherhood is also a transformative experience. I'll tell you -- not to sound like a Hallmark card, but just having him around has rendered my heart completely open and fearless. [When writing the album,] I don't remember exercising my overactive ability to edit myself at all, and I feel an urgency for the truth to prevail. It doesn't matter if [my] lyrics are biting or going piss people off -- I have to write what I'm feeling right now because I have this little guy who's looking at me, and asking the question, "What kind of world is awaiting me?" and that was really what propelled my record.

Well, I like it! There is certainly some analogy with "Good is Good" (the video), but it's not a flaw. I'd love to hear an acoustic version of this song, though. Sometimes a guitar and a stool is all a storyteller really needs.

YES! I'm happy as a pig in mud at Sheryl's farm :-D
Love almost everything about this song, especially in the second half. Overall, it's more groovy and edgy than "Shine Over Babylon", plus contains many elements of sweet retro-rock, funk and rhythm and blues. My only concern is the overuse of the word "gasoline" and the refrain, a little too much catchy and repetitive for my tastes, but I assume it's a sort of conscious (well, i hope so) compromise to appeal to the radio audience (i.e. more airplay, and "Gasoline" definitely deserve a decent exposure, both for the music and the message it carries).
Thumbs up for Sheryl's voice: i totally love it here and it fits perfectly to the song's frantic pace.
As a good wine, she seems to improve with age. Same thing about the band, Peter Stroud and Mike Rowe in particular. They have never failed to impress me.
I hope the studio version will be as good as well. Anyway the live one is already a treat (it would be not the first time however... see "Redemption Day", "I Shall Believe", "It Don't Hurt", "Superstar", "Soak Up the Sun", "Sweet Rosalyn", "Riverwide" etc.) so I don't expect substantial improvements.
Oh, I almost forgot! The part where Sheryl playing the keyboard was freakin' insane!

Way back in the year of 2017
The sun was growing hotter
And oil was way beyond its peak
When crazy Hector Johnson broke into a refinery
And the black gold started flowing
Just like Boston tea
It was the summer of the riots
And London sat in sweltering heat
And the gangs of Mini Coopers
Took the battle to the streets
But when the creed was handed down
For no more trucks and no more cars
They threw cans of petrol through the windows at Scotland Yard
Will be free, will be free
Will be free, will be free
When the Mounties stormed the palace of the Saudi family
They held them up for ransom
Without disturbing their high tea
But their getaway was shaky
They stalled in the Riyadh streets
Cause you can't make it very far
When your tank is on empty
The final can of gasoline was loaded on a truck
And driven through the streets of Agra to the palace aquaduct
You see, all the majesty of worship that once adorned these fatal halls
Was just a target to the angry
As they blew up the Taj Mahal
Will be free, will be free
will be free, will be free
Gary ran a market way down in Tennessee
Where all the farmers got together and talked about this great country
But when the government turned its back on farming
Man, what I hear
They dragged the pumps out of the ground
With a big vintage John Deere
I've got soldiers on my payroll
Standing guard on my front drive
Snipers on the roof poised at those
Who don't want me alive
Cause they audited my taxes
My family under threat
Cause I've got a message and a megaphone
And I'll scream it to the death
Will be free, will be free
Will be free, will be free
You got the farms in Argentina
Making fuel from sugar cane
You got the bastards in Washington
Afraid of popping the greed vain
Cause the money's in the pipeline
And pipeline's running dry
And we'll be the last to recognize
Where there’s shit there’s always flies

[NEWS] SHERYL CROW READIES "DETOURS"
GRAMMY WINNER FINISHES HER NEW STUDIO ALBUM
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow will release her sixth studio album, Detours, on February 5, 2008. The album marks the return of producer Bill Bottrell, who previously worked with Crow on her breakthrough debut album Tuesday Night Music Club, which earned the singer three Grammy Awards, and sold more than ten million copies worldwide.
"This is the most honest record I've ever made. It's about being forced to wake up," says Crow. Lyrically the album is the most politically and personally outspoken record of her career, addressing the current state of the world from different perspectives as well as some of the personal challenges she's faced over the last several years. The album, which in the end remains spiritually hopeful, retains the raw freshness of Bottrell's Tuesday Night Music Club-production and subtly pushes the boundaries of her previous work into new musical territories. Track titles include "Shine Over Babylon" (currently available on iTunes, and the centerpiece of the album in Crow's opinion), "Love Is Free," the Arabic-tinged "Peace Be Upon Us," "Lullaby for Wyatt" (from Grace Is Gone, starring John Cusack) and the stark folky album opener "God Bless This Mess."
Sheryl can be seen performing tracks from Detours on CNN's "Heroes" on December 6th and on CBS' "A Home for the Holidays" on December 21st.

ARMSTRONG-OLSEN: A MESSAGE FROM SHERYL
To my wonderful, level-headed fans!!
I will only do this once. I am acknowledging a tabloid just this once. I was quoted in Page Six this morning and I am beyond angry about it. The quote regarding Lance Armstrong and his personal life is completely fabricated and I am going on the record here.
It is my belief that you all are wise enough to know that you cannot count on this column or any other tabloid as representing truth. It is my wish that we all better our lives by not investing even a moment of our precious lives entertaining ourselves with this meaningless and degrading fodder.
Lance and I are friends. I have a lot of respect for him and what he does in the world of cancer. What he does in his personal life, whether it be true or not, is none of my business nor would I ever comment on it.
Let's leave it at that.
Sometimes Sheryl seems to read my mind. LOL
Please STOP sending me emails about Ashley Olsen and Lance Armstrong. It's not my business and, quite frankly, I don't care. I don't know about you, but I don't have neither the time nor the stomach to read dozens and dozens of gossip-related messages.

[CMA 2007] TALES FROM NASHVILLE
[...] Last year, when I talked to Sheryl Crow on the carpet, she was promising to do a country album next. But based on some statements she'd already made about the CD she has coming in early '08, I had a feeling she wasn't going to make good on that right now. "No," she laughed. "I just could not edit myself on this — it's really political, and I'm sure that country radio will be going, 'Maybe not this record.' But I'm real happy with it. It's very direct about at least how I feel things are going in the world and also what's happened to me the last couple of years — the end of a relationship and adopting a baby. I adopted Wyatt maybe three weeks before I started the record…. Even the ones that are personal tie into the more political stuff." Here was one big surprise: Though she became estranged from some of the collaborators who worked on her debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club, shortly after it came out, that disc's producer, Bill Bottrell, returned to man things this time around. "We had an unbelievable time," she assured us of the hell-freezes-over reunion. "Good wine was flowing." [...]
"At last night's Country Music Awards singer Sheryl Crow gushed to OK! about the new man in her life — son Wyatt Crow, who she adopted in May. Little Wyatt, only 6 months old, is a muscle man in the making, says Sheryl.
“Right now, the funniest thing is that he acts in a muscle pose and makes a grunting sound like he is really flexing his muscles. He gets totally red faced,” said the proud parent.
As a new mom, there are a few things Sheryl never leaves home without: her son’s special balm and his favorite silver rattle. “It is the very first thing that he can grip and put in his mouth so we don’t go anywhere without that.” "

An Absurd Idea: Concert at Altitude
November 4th, 2007 by Alex
I was reading Maxim and saw that you can buy an Airbus that seats 900+ passengers for the low hundreds of millions of dollars. Talking to a buddy in the production services industry (read: a company that provides big ass speakers for concerts, among other things), we thought it would be cool to have a concert on an Airbus… in flight. We’d never heard of it being done before.
Picture a cargo plane emptied out. Fit it with a stage, truss, lighting, and a concert-grade audio rig. It would all have to be secured to stay put and be FAA approved. The challenge alone of building in such a space might interest some of the premier staging companies (Mountain Productions, for example). Add sofas, L-shaped couches, recliners, etc. Power would probably be an issue as well, but all in all a cool project to consider.
Sheryl Crow beat us to it four years ago. A much smaller scale audience and without the custom rig. She rode on a commercial United flight, but the concept remains. So much for a completely original idea, however I still think it’d be cool. Now I just need to find someone to be the bank.

[NEWS] NEW YORK RESTORATION PROJECT RAISES OVER $2M AT HULAWEEN BALL
Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project (NYRP) Hosts ‘Hulaween’ Benefit Gala at Waldorf-Astoria From: PRNewswire Date: October 31, 2007
NEW YORK, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ — Over $2M was raised tonight at the star- studded Hulaween benefit for Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project (NYRP). A capacity crowd was entertained at the Waldorf-Astoria by Sheryl Crow along with a special duet performed by Crow and Midler.
The funding from Hulaween supports NYRP initiatives — including its newly announced signature program, MillionTreesNYC, in conjunction with Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York to plant and care for one million trees throughout the five boroughs in the next decade.
Greeted by an enthusiastic audience, Mayor Bloomberg said, “Hulaween is a special event - benefiting a wonderful organization. None of it would have been possible without the marvelous Bette Midler. For 12 years, the New York Restoration Project has done so much to make this a cleaner, more beautiful New York. We are working together to plant one million trees in New York City over the next ten years — the equivalent to 40 times the number of trees in Central Park. It’s an important part of PlaNYC — our long-term strategy to put New York City on solid ground economically and environmentally. Thanks to Bette’s work, in partnership with the Parks Department, the whole city will benefit from cleaner air and more beautiful neighborhoods.”
MillionTreesNYC (http://www.milliontreesnyc.org/) seeks to leverage every opportunity to plant trees on public land; and, the Parks Department and the New York Restoration Project will enlist individuals and organizations throughout the City to plant and maintain trees on privately owned property as well. The Parks Department and NYRP will work with community partners as it assesses tree planting opportunities at places including schoolyards, public housing campuses, health care facilities, business districts, commercial and residential developments, front yards and other private lands. The initiative will include extensive outreach and education for everyone from residential and commercial developers to children. NYRP and its partners will seek the financial and in-kind support of individuals, corporations and foundations.
A grateful Bette Midler thanked the supporters of NYRP saying, “In the 12 years we have been working together, we are stronger than ever. By picking up garbage; building new parks, reviving neglected community gardens, planting trees, building boats, teaching environmental science; offering nature walks, overnight camping, family festivals — we are constantly working to improve the lives of all the citizens of our wonderful town. And now working with the Mayor to plant one million trees in New York City over the next ten years fulfills a lifelong dream for me. I am thankful to each and every one of you who have contributed in so many ways. You are my heroes.”

NYRP reclaims, restores, and develops under-resourced open spaces in New York City’s five boroughs. As “the conservancy of forgotten places,” NYRP rescues public parks and community gardens that are most threatened by the challenges facing underserved communities. Since 1995, NYRP has steadily “cleaned and greened” some of New York City’s most blighted public areas by removing over 80,000 tons of garbage and debris from project sites. It has created Swindler Cove, a gorgeous new park out of an illegal dump on the Harlem River; saved and revitalized more than 100 community gardens; taught hundreds of at-risk children about the environment; and built the first boathouse on the Harlem River in over 100 years.
