THE USUAL SUSPECTS PERFORM AT BB KING

Sunday, July 30, 2006
Steve Hankins

A well-known and well-established Bootheel band performs Saturday at an equally well-known and well-established Memphis venue.

The Usual Suspects, perhaps Kennett's favorite classic rock and blues outfit, invades Memphis for a performance at BB. King's, a long time fixture on Beale Street. Guitarist Jim Baker said Saturday's appearance will be the third time the group has performed at the internationally-known nightclub.

"We first played there in 2003," Baker said. "We knew we wanted to play somewhere on Beale Street.

"We played the Little River Fest in Hornersville," he added. "Chris Droke heard us there and sort of set up the gig for us at BBs. We actually played at BBs without any of them over there hearing us first."

Baker said that engagement was a special one for a few different reasons.

"Well, it was Elvis Week, for one thing," he said. "There were just tons of people on Beale Street from all over the world.

"Sheryl Crow met us over there and she sat in with the band," Baker added. "Wendell [Crow] was thrilled to be on stage there at BBs in the first place. But to share that stage with his daughter made it an extra-special evening."

Baker was careful to say that although that event was a treat, Sheryl Crow will not appear with the hometown crew this time out.

"We had at least 150 people come from Kennett come out to hear us that night," Baker said. "But with it being Elvis Week with all those thousands of people there who might not normally be on Beale Street, and then they found out Sheryl was at BBs, the place just packed out to a standing-room-only crowd.

"There were 400 or 500 people there then," he added. "We all had a great time, and we're pretty sure everyone there did, too."

Although Sheryl Crow remains busy performing with her own band, Baker said Ashley Wilcoxson plans to sit in and perform vocals with the group Saturday.

"None of us can believe we're playing BBs again," Baker said. "Standing on that stage is frightening.

"Especially when you think about Eric Clapton and all the other stars who have stood right there and jammed," he added. "Ashley joining us there will just be super. She's making quite a name for herself in Nashville, and the word is spreading about her. She really is very talented."

The Usual Suspects -- Dunk Carter, Wendell Crow, Daryl Wilcoxson, Gary Wilcoxson, Ken Williams and Baker -- take the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday for a two-hour show.

Cover is €3.92 ($5) at the door, Baker added.

"We hope our friends from Kennett and all over come out to join us," Baker said. "It's good, clean fun for everybody."

THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW...

Left pic : Stone Cold theatrical poster; Right pic : Sheryl with the producer Hugh Padgham in 1991.

Yesterday I discovered that "Welcome to the Real Life", an outtake from the "Unreleased" album (officially entitled Sheryl Crow, but never released, except for promo purposes), has been used in "Stone Cold", a crappy b-movie directed in 1991 by Craig Baixley and interpreted by Brian Bosworth, a former football player. Singular, eh?

Apparently, this one was the first Sheryl's song to appear on a movie soundtrack. Among other things, according to IMDB, "Stone Cold" was released on May 17th, 1991 in the US, two months before the launch of "Point Break", which featured "Hundreds of Tears".

ACCORDION

"That Sheryl Crow appeared on my album (Other Songs) was just an innocent coincidence. There was one song** that was on the verge of being dropped from the record, and Mitchell (Froom) was thinking it needed an accordion or a harmonium, when Tchad (Blake) mentioned Sheryl. I think she was really happy to do it because she doesn't get asked to play accordion a lot."

[ITA] SHERYL CROW CONFESSA IL SUO SOGNO, VOGLIO DEI FIGLI

New York, 11 lug.

[BGWT] REVIEW: OTTAWA

Scotiabank Place, Ottawa - July 10, 2006

Crow soars at the Bank

By DENIS ARMSTRONG -- Ottawa Sun

OTTAWA - Sheryl Crow has good reason to rock out. After an especially rough year in which nothing seemed to go right, Crow, 44, split with fiance and seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and then had to cancel her tour last winter after discovering she had breast cancer.

So it was no wonder that the eight-time Grammy Award-winning singer was anxious to perform again. That was clear to see in her two-hour-plus set last night at Scotiabank Place.
I don't know if its because of music's gender bias, or Crow's cool easy-going personality, but she's never quite gotten the recognition she deserves.

Surely one of the more inventive songwriters in rock today, it's often seemed that her romantic entanglements with celebrated actors and musicians such as Owen Wilson, Eric Clapton and Armstrong have from time to time overshadowed the often brilliant career she's had since releasing her debut album Tuesday Night Music Club and the singles All I Wanna Do and Leaving Las Vegas.

Since then, Crow has released a string of fantastically eclectic singles, including My Favourite Mistake, a song she wrote about her relationship with Clapton, The First Cut Is The Deepest, If It Makes You Happy, Steve McQueen and most recently, Good Is Good from her 2005 album Wildflower.

Now, post-surgery and back on the road looking like a million bucks, Crow opened her show with Run Baby Run, featuring a string quartet, organ and regular band and Crow wailing a real hurtin' vocal blues streak.

Personally I've always enjoyed Crow's clever brand of pop the same way I've tapped into Jann Arden, with those hopelessly cynical lyrics and the hard rock bite she gives soft rock.

Close your eyes and you could almost hear Arden backing Crow on Hard To Stand, Maybe Angels, Good Is Good and the lovely Letter To God with the whole stage awash with video hand-scrawling a divine wish list.

Surprisingly, fewer than 3,000 fans turned out for the concert. With that small a house, Crow would have been perfectly at home at the National Arts Centre. While the intimate setting, at least intimate by hockey arena standards, gave the fans a close look at Crow, the hockey rink's wretched acoustics devoured the plaintive and gorgeously textured string arrangements that perfectly complemented Crow's breezy, sweet and sometimes snarling vocals. I could barely make out one of my favourite Crow tunes, My Favourite Mistake. Acoustic challenges were less of a problem on her moving cover of Cat Stevens' The First Cut Is The Deepest and, later, Leaving Las Vegas.
A version of Strong Enough with slide guitar, fiddle, strings and three-part harmonies and the title track to her latest album Wildflower pulled heartstrings with lots of emotion and gorgeous playing, while a rousing turn on If It Makes You Happy had the front three rows all up dancing along.

Perhaps big electric power-chord guitar bands can get away with bad sound, but Crow's concert was far too musically complex, subtle and downright delicious to experience in a cave in Kanata. But Crow didn't complain. Instead, interspersed throughout the night, she kept the mood alternately rocking out full tilt and then sweetly melancholic, talking only briefly about her cancer before playing Always On Your Side on the piano.
By the end of the night, Crow was pumping up the energy on All I Wanna Do and A Change Would Do You Good.

Crow is such as an imaginative songwriter and performer, seeing her play under any circumstances would have been good. But tonight, with the worst behind her, she seemed just that much better.

DMB @ Fenway!

I know this is late, becuase the concert was like a while ago. But it was so much fun! First of all, I've never been to Fenway. I love it there, I love the atmosphere, it's magical, really. Second of all, the last concert I went to was KC and the Sunshine Band when I was about 8 or so. So it was really fun! We took the T in & I liked that too. Oh, and then Sheryl Crow was there too. She was really good. She's so pretty, too! DMB was sooooo good. They sounded great and the stage and everything was gorgeous when the lights came on and everything. I got a cute T Shirt too. So in conclusion, DMB & Sheryl Crow @ Fenway was one of the major highlights of Summer 2006!

SHERYL CROW MAKES SURPRISE VISIT TO BOSTON CANCER HOSPITAL

dana-farber.org

Before entertaining tens of thousands of fans at Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox, cancer survivor Sheryl Crow made a quiet visit Friday, July 7 to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, just up the street. Crow was successfully treated for breast cancer earlier this year. The nine-time Grammy Award winner wanted to give back to those fighting the disease. She met with women and doctors at Dana-Farber's Women's Cancers Center and she visited children with cancer in the Jimmy Fund Clinic. The visit was unannounced, so it was a surprise of a lifetime to those waiting for appointments or receiving chemotherapy to have the musician walk up and say, "Hi, I'm Sheryl."

CROW DUMPED LANCE BECAUSE HE WOULDN'T CHANGE FOR HER

Rocker SHERYL CROW has hinted she split up with cycling hero LANCE ARMSTRONG because the Tour De France champion refused to change for her. The couple shocked fans when they announced they had split earlier this year (06), just six months after becoming engaged, and now Crow is celebrating her successful breast cancer battle by revealing all about her broken romance in a new TV interview. Crow sat down with US newswoman DIANE SAWYER to tape a chat for breakfast show GOOD MORNING AMERICA, which airs today (06JUL06) and tomorrow (07JUL06), and insisted she's not bitter about the break-up. She told Sawyer, "I'm not angry. I mean, honestly, I look at it and I just know that I can't be angry at Lance for being who he is. He's a great person." Crow also uses the interview to clear up reports that cancer survivor Armstrong dumped the rocker when he discovered she had been diagnosed with the disease. When asked if the rumours are true, she shook her head and said, "No, no."

[ MAGAZINE ] SHERYL ON VANITY FAIR, AUGUST ISSUE

Sheryl Crow Talks About Beating Cancer and Losing Lance Armstrong; Armstrong Talks About Crow

NEW YORK, N.Y.—After family, Sheryl Crow contacted Lance Armstrong when she learned of her breast-cancer diagnosis, reports Vanity Fair contributing editor Frank DiGiacomo. (The August issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on July 5 and nationally July 11.) Armstrong was on a soul-searching solo road trip from Lake Tahoe to Oregon when he got the call, and tells DiGiacomo, "I actually turned around to make the drive to L.A. We talked along the way and she said, 'You know, I just don't think that's a great idea.'" According to Armstrong, Crow told him that as much as she wanted him by her side, she felt "it would be hard on her in trying to manage a breakup and the diagnosis. And I totally understood." So, Armstrong says, he told her, "'Listen, if you need me there, I'll be there in an hour. If you need me to step back and just be a friend and somebody that is always there, I'm on call.' And that stands true today."

Crow tells DiGiacomo, "It was difficult, you know, I know he wanted to be there. I would have loved for him to have swept in and carried me through," she says, but she ultimately realized that she needed to rely on someone else. "When you're in those moments when you're really clinging to a life buoy, you look around and say, 'Who are the people that can really stand up for me? Who can really just be there for me all the

way through this—emotionally, unconditionally?' And that was my family." The breakup was "devastating" for both of them, Crow says. "I do think about Lance every day. And I think about his kids every day." And every so often she gets what she calls a "phantom itch" when something she sees or reads reminds her of an experience they shared. When DiGiacomo asks Crow if the split had something to do with the fact that Armstrong did not share Crow's enthusiasm for starting another family, Crow responds: "It would be easy to say this is all about my wanting to get married and have kids but it was never that simple. It was much deeper than that." Crow refuses to go into further detail about her breakup with Armstrong, telling DiGiacomo in an e-mail: "I will never feel comfortable talking about the private inner workings of my relationships. It just makes my life feel compromised."

"I think we both came to the realization," Armstrong tells DiGiacomo, "that we were at different points of our lives for a variety of reasons—if it was age, if it was careers, or if it was, you know, a whole host of other things. We tried so hard to make it work for a long time."

"I think we still really love each other. I definitely still love him and always will love him," Crow reveals. Armstrong "was, I think, the biggest teacher for me in my life. I learned about myself in that relationship, for better or for worse." Armstrong tells DiGiacomo that the breakup was stressful for him and was one of the reasons he was making the solo drive. It was "this moment of really realizing your life will never be the same again," says Armstrong, but "I have zero regrets." Like Crow, he prefers to look at the positive aspects of the relationship they shared. "I said this when we were together, and I stick with it: I've never loved a woman like I love Sheryl Crow. I had two great years with an awesome lady."

Crow tells DiGiacomo that her cancer diagnosis stunned her. "I'm 44 years old. I got diagnosed with breast cancer. That's shocking," she says. "But I feel like I'm 20. So, to me, it was like, What? Really shocking." Prior to her diagnosis, she says, "my body was a demonstration in how not to look 40. There was a lot of ego attached to it, and I had to let go of all that. Because, literally, for eight weeks, I was sleeping a lot of the day." The fatigue was unsettling to her, because it did not mesh with her 24-7, Taking Care of Business work ethic, writes DiGiacomo. Making room for her treatment, she says, "introduced me to a whole aspect of life, which is: 'When there's nothing to do, do nothing.'"

Crow tells DiGiacomo she was stunned by the outpouring of support that came her way—Bob Dylan sent flowers—and that girlfriends like Laura Dern, Rosanna Arquette, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and Kelly Lynch "just totally rose to the occasion and kind of held hospice at my house." Before her diagnosis she was ambivalent about living in L.A., Crow says, but the support led to an epiphany: "Wait a second, I've been looking for a home and I didn't realize where my home really is."

Though she has been given a clean bill of health and will submit to follow-up testing every six months for the next three years, Crow says that doesn't erase the knowledge "that you had it, and might it spread? And might there be a lone cell out there that they didn't get?" When Crow says this, it's the only time during her interview with DiGiacomo that he hears her voice falter.

Since her diagnosis Crow is taking even better care of herself, eating right, she tells DiGiacomo. … She has given up Fritos, sugar, and her beloved breakfasts of doughnuts or "cheesy omelets" and now starts her day with something called Simply Fiber and exists on what she calls an "Eskimo diet," rich in fish, herbs, and colorful vegetables.

As for her career, Crow tells DiGiacomo that she's "been writing like a frantic mad person," and that the next album is "going to be terrifying and wonderful."

[ DIPLOMACY AT WORK ] SHERYL CROW FIGHTS DOUBLE DOSE OF HEARTACHE

July 4, 2006 — Fate dealt Sheryl Crow a double-dose of heartache when the multiplatinum superstar was forced to face breast cancer soon after her split with fiancé Lance Armstrong.

The 44-year-old singer underwent breast cancer surgery in February to remove a lump and followed that up with preventive radiation therapy. The procedure took place not long after she and Armstrong, who famously overcame testicular cancer, announced that they were splitting up.

Crow returned to performing in May, and in an exclusive interview with "Good Morning America's" Diane Sawyer, she challenged reports that the seven-time Tour de France champion deserted her when he found out she was sick.

"No. No. No, it was really, I mean, really difficult, you know, just really difficult for both of us," Crow says. "I'm not angry. I mean, honestly, I look at it, and I just know that I can't be angry at Lance for being who he is. You know, he's a great person."

Crow and Armstrong met in 2003 and announced last August that they were going to get married. The 34-year-old cyclist has three children from a previous marriage. It would have been Crow's first time down the aisle.

Months before the breakup, Crow had a checkup and got some unsettling news from her doctors, but she hoped she wouldn't need surgery.

"I did a routine mammogram and the calcifications showed up in both my breasts," she says. "They said, 'Well, look, you know, [it] looks like they're forming a pattern but come back in six months.

"When she came in and said, 'Look it's not what we thought. We're going to have to do a lumpectomy, and then we'll talk about where we're at; whether it's in your nodes or its not.' I was so shocked. I mean, obviously, lots of tears"

Crow's full interview will air Thursday and Friday on "Good Morning America."

From the official newsletter :

Second Round of Sheryl Crow & John Mayer Tour PRE-SALE Information

Like the 4th of July, another round of pre-sales for the Crow/Mayer co-headline tour already upon us, and it’s not to be ignored.

Sales of the first seven dates have been somewhat swift and there is no reason to think these will be any different. In danger of sounding like a glitzy carnival barker, it just occurred to some that this will probably be the last tour Sheryl will undertake for a while. She has been out on the road consistently (apart from the enforced 'break') since August '05 and the words ‘studio’ and ‘next record’ have been popping up more and more in conversations amongst the people who matter, so expect to see Sheryl off the map for an extended period after Oct 12th…

For a very particular and smart reason that has escaped me at this hour of 2:40am, the times for the pre-sales will be staggered, so please make a note of the exact time and be aware that the times given are Eastern Standard Time.

The actual day and date of the pre-sale is the first day back at work….Wednesday 5th July

And now, in case you have not read it before…..here’s a word from our pre-sale co-ordinators:

Links to the Pre-Sales will be available on Sheryl's website www.sherylcrow.com (or if you are already here look below!)

Or you can save time and register early by visiting http://sherylcrowtickets.musictoday.com. There is no charge for registering and participation in the Fan Community Pre-Sale.

Benefits of participating in the Pre-Sale include: Access to tickets before the General Public, Lower Service Fees, and access to some of the best seats in the house! Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you on the road!
