Crow: A woman for all seasons
SIOUX CITY - If Sheryl Crow is Saturday in the Park's opening act, Cee Lo, Ben and the boys better be pretty darn good.
Working that laid-back vibe usually found in Grandview Park around 4 p.m., Crow got an Orpheum Theatre crowd singin' and swayin' Wednesday night. It wasn't a high-powered light show, just an intimate evening with Sheryl, her band and hundreds of friends.
Although Crow had a nine-piece group behind her, she was able to find the quieter moments in just about everything - even those mega-hits. And she wasn't afraid to sing some of the songs that don't exactly belong in her "summer" string.
"Leaving Las Vegas," in fact, had that 11 o'clock vibe, even though it came early in the two-hour show and prompted Crow to talk about Siouxland's flooding woes ("you've been under water a little bit, but, hell, you got off easy. I'm from Missouri") and brag about Stoney Creek - her Siouxland home away from home. (The place even got a shout-out in "Soak Up the Sun." Good job.)
Crow wasn't afraid to bring the heat, either. On "Summer Day," she partnered with guitarist Doyle Bramhall II (her boyfriend), then asked, "That wasn't too sexy for Sioux City, was it?"
Bramhall just smiled. You can see what his producing skills have done on her latest work; Wednesday you could hear what kind of a musical impact he's had on her older hits. He offered duets throughout the evening and brought a fun guitar riff or two to "All I Wanna Do."
Dressed in jeans, a metallic top, lots of jewelry and her hair in a ponytail, Crow wasn't afraid to relax throughout the night. She talked about prostitutes she studied for "Sweet Rosalyn" in New Orleans and encouraged the crowd to check out the city - another place rocked by water.
Surprisingly, Crow didn't lead with some of the powerhouse hits - she saved them for later. But she did offer up a couple of cuts from her latest, "100 Miles from Memphis," that boast a pretty marked Southern tone.
The title cut prompted her to do a little "gospel" hands, but "Leaving Las Vegas" brought out the karma moves - all stuff Crow has saved in the past for later numbers.
"A Change" combined both the lyrical heft and the vocal surprise we associate with her.
If, indeed, she's edging toward country, it wasn't hard to find bits of Emmylou Harris in many of her later songs.
The crowd, though, really wanted the summer girl - and she brought it in a closing medley that effortlessly moved from "Winding Road" to "Soak Up the Sun" to the encore "All I Wanna Do."
Crow stayed true to her word, too, and didn't let the audience sing most of her hits. After a chorus on "Soak Up the Sun," she complimented them, then went right back into her moves. Excellent.
Even better? She pulled out a piano (no kidding) and offered up a soulful "I Shall Believe" that showcased every flourish her voice possesses. It was wonderful - the perfect first course to what should be a filling musical weekend.

Filmed in California in November of 2010, the majority of the tunes on this DVD come from the soulful, R&B flavored, stripped down disc, 100 Miles From Memphis. Joining Crow onstage for this performance at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, and providing the backbone for her set, is a group of unbelievably tight musicians that call themselves The Thieves. While Crow is definitely the star of the show these guys, even though quite unassuming, really play their tails off.
Crow looks and sounds incredible as she works through some of her lesser known tunes from her last disc, 100 Miles From Memphis. She also digs deep into her catalog to pull out some crowd pleasing favorites such as, "My Favorite Mistake," "If It Makes You Happy," and "Soak Up The Sun," all of which are performed to perfection and even take on a bit of a life of their own with some improvisations by Crow and the band.
Crow, looking very relaxed, banters and jokes with the crowd on numerous occasions throughout the performance creating a vibe that is extremely intimate and personal. Really I think the casual vibe makes all the difference in the world; it feel as though this is just a bunch of friends and musicians who have gotten together for a large jam session. The picture quality and sound are phenomenal and I enjoyed the bonus rehearsal footage as well.
At the end of the day, this is really an enjoyable disc that should not only please fans of Sheryl Crow but fans of good solid musicianship as well.

[LIVE REVIEW] ASPEN SNOWMASS JAZZ FESTIVAL - JUNE 25
[....] Saturday night's performance by Sheryl Crow seemed foreordained to be a hit. From the top of the Ute Trail to the Jazz Aspen box office, the chatter was about how people were going to score tickets for the sold-out show. So despite marginal sound and an audience that in no way would be described as a core Crow crowd, the show got by fine on a “place to be” vibe. Crow, emphasizing the soul sound on “100 Miles to Memphis,” her 2010 album, was surrounded by horns and backing singers. Crow herself was in good voice — and even better legs, shown to nice effect in short shorts. [...]

Sheryl Crow has just released an inspiring and laid back DVD on Blu-Ray titled, “Miles From Memphis,” on Eagle Rock Entertainment where we find this artist infusing urban and soul sounds in sync with her gentle engaging musical side. Filmed in the Fall of 2010 at the illustrious Pantages Theater at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, Crow comments on the bonus section that she is in awe of this old theater and her encounter with Johnny Cash years back that has influenced her present style of song.
Featuring 18-songs in high definition DTS 5.1 surround sound captures Crow performing the 2-hour stand out show at this pristine art deco Hollywood venue. The DVD captures Crow utilizing her strong with conviction vocals and captures her actually enjoying her performance at ease either behind the piano or strumming her guitar.
Acknowledging that her fans prefer her guitar performances she uses her trained voice as an instrument and settles into some of her more familiar songs in the back end of the disc. This talented singer/songwriter was touring in support of her “100 Miles From Memphis,” album – fronting a powerhouse 9-piece band that swings through the best tracks from the record, and reinvigorates fan favorites with a soulful Memphis flavor and sound. And there’s a little Motown in the mix, too with Crow’s 1994 megahit, “All I Wanna Do,” extended jam on Marvin Gaye’s classic, “Got To Give It Up,” and a joyous rendition of Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.”
The picture and sound quality of this latest release is a delightful and riveting. The backdrop is beautiful with different textures and the band the Thieves are the perfect accompaniment to Crows’ recognizable voice. Realizing that she is one of the older stateswoman in the business for her 17 year career she proves that she still has what it takes to deliver a solid performance. At times the concert drags and stalls but her backing band has the energy to lift the music to another level.
Crow claims that she lived exactly 100 miles from Memphis in Kennett, Missouri and had sought out Doyle Bramhall II and his partner Justin Stanley as producers fresh from producing a killer Clapton record. Using a more organic style of creating music Crow created songs that we a refreshing departure from some of her older style of songs. Crow is credited with saying, “The band is truly a kinetic force and incendiary power behind me. Grooves thickened (with the new band nicked named the Thieves) songs were expanded and jam sections evolved naturally.”
The Pantages theater opened in 1930 and is an art-deco masterpiece. Howard Hughes once owned the venue which hosted the Academy Awards from 1949-1959. Sheryl Crow has managed to keep her career on a very even keel over the years. While there have been commercial highs and lows, she has always been able to keep her music fresh and exciting. Almost twenty years to the year of her first hit, “All I Wanna Do,” Crow has just released a new concert DVD that encompasses all eras of her career, from those first hits to her current album, the highly underrated 100 Miles From Memphis.
Let’s talk about the newer material first. “Our Love Is Fading” gets the DVD going in an energetic fashion. “100 Miles From Memphis” is as fun live as it is on the record. It’s one of those records that if Pop radio were what it was fifteen years ago, would have been huge. “Summer Day,” a crowd favorite, has the audience singing along with her, and with the bouncy feel, you can’t blame them. “Roses And Moonlight” is about as sensual and romantic as she has been in some time, and “I Want You Back” is very effective as a soulful tribute to her one time employer, Michael Jackson.
Then, there are the classics. “All I Wanna Do” has lost none of the spunk and charm over the years, “Can’t Cry Anymore” has the same amount of anger and bite, and “Soak Up The Sun” is still as pure fun as it was when C’Mon, C’Mon was released. (Hey, as heavy as some of Sheryl’s music has been over the years, that is a compliment!) She goes for the dramatic flair on “Strong Enough” and nails it, and ends with one of the biggest non-singles she ever had, the beautiful “I Shall Believe” from 1993’s Tuesday Night Music Club.
While the hairstyles and the clothes might change over the years, Crow still looks and acts the part of “Rock Star with Swagger” very well. She’s one of a kind, and this disc shows the sexiest high school teacher to ever come out of Kennett, MO very much in command of her craft!

[INTERVIEW] SHERYL CROW EXAMINES COUNTRY ROOTS (SIOUX CITY JOURNAL)
Music isn't Sheryl Crow's No. 1 priority. Motherhood is.
Since sons Wyatt, 4, and Levi, 1, became part of her family, the nine-time Grammy winner has reordered her life. "Motherhood has changed everything," she says. "It's given a real direction to my days."
Before Crow hits the concert stage, "I make sure they're in bed, tucked in, teeth brushed and we've said our prayers. And then, mommy goes to work. It's great."
And exhausting. Crow admits two boys can be a handful and, yes, "I try to catch a nap when they do."
Still, motherhood has given the Missouri native a chance to broaden a life already packed with experience. Even though it seems like she has been part of the pop/rock scene for decades, the 49-year-old Crow says there were those lean years when family members wondered if she'd ever make a solid living as a singer.
"My parents really wanted me to get a teaching degree to fall back on. I taught for two years, but I knew there was another career I wanted to pursue." (Today she reminds friends she still has that degree in case "this music thing doesn't work out.")
In the 1980s and 1990s, she toured relentlessly and got her first big break at the second Woodstock festival. That brought attention from producers and that debut album ("Tuesday Night Music Club") that brought her three Grammys -- including Record of the Year and Best New Artist.
"After that, we went back out on the road for two-and-a-half years. I love that I came up through the ranks of those who toured as troubadours."
Competitions like "American Idol" and "The Voice" puzzle her, even though they've become the starting gate for many of today's newest artists. Crow served as a mentor on "Idol" and realized "these kids are more professional than I was at their age. Today, every kid wants to be famous. I just wanted to do music. I don't know that I could actually be part of a talent show per se."
Since her big Grammy splash, Crow has recorded with some of the most respected names in the business, won six more Grammys and looked for new musical challenges.
Among them: working with Loretta Lynn and Miranda Lambert. The three recorded "Coal Miner's Daughter" last year and, already, have picked up award nominations.
"I was completely flattered and honored to record with Loretta," Crow says. "That was definitely something that would have been on my bucket list. She's very much in line with who I am and where I'm from. She's amazing."
And one of those legends that comes along once or twice in a lifetime.
In the late 1980s, Crow sang backup for Michael Jackson on his Bad World Tour.
"He was the biggest star in the world. Watching him every night was like watching a Broadway show. He was quintessentially professional and uniquely loved."
She saw the downside to that kind of fame, though, and realized she wanted to be in the business for other reasons.
Her latest album, "100 Miles from Memphis," touches on early influences. Her next one could have a country vibe.
Ask, point blank, if the CD is going to be country and she hedges.
"I've always gotten a lot of play on CMT. One of the reasons I've been around as long as I have is that they've embraced me. (Pop/rock) radio has veered away from playing song-oriented songs. But country radio is very much open to the singer/songwriter."
But the album? "It will be in line with who I am and where I'm from."
Thus far, Crow has written 10 songs and will probably write another 10 before deciding on the tracks. It's slated for release in 2012. But first she has the score to a Broadway musical to consider.
"It's a remake of a famous movie. It's a very well-known, very realized piece of work."
And its name? "I can't say," she admits. "But they're going to go into the table read. I've written 16 songs and I'll be there when they work through it."
Good thing, too. When Wyatt goes into pre-K next year, Crow plans to limit her touring. "I'll only tour in the summer...but that's the most fun time to tour."
Motherhood matters. "The boys are the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning. They're the last thing I think about when I go to bed. All my decisions are based on their well-being."
Thus far she hasn't tried to influence their music tastes. But, Crow says, she's working on it.
"Wyatt likes my music," she says proudly. "Just not as much as Lady Gaga's."

[NEWS] SHERYL CROW'S RHYTHMIC ROAD: MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT PLAYING LIVE

Though she’s among the best-known and best-selling artists of her generation, Sheryl Crow remains a rock’n’roll road warrior at heart.
With seven studio albums under her belt and a consistent string of hits since 1994’s “All I Wanna Do” catapulted her to stardom, Crow said, “For me, making records is ultimately about going out and playing them live.”
Her performance tonight at 8:30 in the Benedict Music Tent at the 21st annual Jazz Aspen Snowmass June Festival comes at the beginning of a summer-long stretch of six-night-a-week shows across the country in towns big and small, in venues ranging from down-home clubs to large arenas with her six-piece band.
“We play anywhere from sheds to clubs to festivals on any given day, we play anywhere,” Crow said Thursday from a Los Angeles tour stop. “It’s an opportunity to keep working and we’re just happy to always be playing.”
At 49, the country-rock icon and singer-songwriter balances her stretches on the road with a quiet domestic life on her farm outside of Nashville, Tenn., where she’s lived since 2003.
The Aspen stop marks her first local performance. She said she’s particularly excited about playing here because she’ll be able to visit relatives who live in western Colorado, and to show her two young adopted sons the Rocky Mountains.
She gives her blended brand of pop, rock and country a creative spin in live performances, mixing up tempos and arrangements while hunting to find the best version of her songs.
“I feel like you’re always looking for the best version of songs,” she said. “Just because you recorded it one way doesn’t mean it’s the quintessential version of it. So we try to keep it loose and I allow my band to find their way through it and create as they go.”
But she said fans can expect her signature songs will sound familiar enough to sing along with tonight.
“The hits, of course, we try to make sound identifiable,” she said, “because a lot of the time, that’s what people want to hear.”
She said tonight’s set will include most of her hits, and a lot of the material from her soulful 2010 album, “100 Miles From Memphis.”
Among modern artists, Crow has been sought out for collaborations with some of the best and brightest performers in pop music, from Bob Dylan to Emmylou Harris and the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards has a guest spot on her most recent album.
Of all her collaborators, however, she said Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks has proved to be her best mentor.
“I think I’ve been exceptionally blessed to play with so many people I admire,” Crow said. “Working with Stevie Nicks was very impactful for me, and left a huge mark on me creatively.”
This spring, Crow tried her first crossover into publishing, using her celebrity status to write the cookbook, “If It Makes You Healthy.” She co-wrote it with Chuck White, the chef who taught her how to use nutrition to boost her immune system as she successfully battled breast cancer in 2006.
Crow admitted that she still doesn’t cook much, especially while she’s on the road, but said she learned a lot about eating well while she recovered and wanted to share her newfound knowledge.
“I changed the way I approached nutrition, as part of my staying well,” she said. “It’s for people who don’t cook, like me, and don’t know that much about what is in food to actually build our immune system and put us in a defensive position against disease.”
While her time as a cancer patient directly led to her cookbook, Crow’s art for the most part doesn’t draw directly from her personal life. And when it does, it does so in a general way.
“Overtly, it doesn’t,” she said. “But covertly it does ... Everything in life informs your art.”

Review: Sheryl Crow makes old seem new

Like 100-degree days, the Pioneer Day parade and handcart re-enactments, Sheryl Crow has become a summertime fixture in Salt Lake City, making seemingly annual stops here.
"It seems like we were just here a few weeks ago," Crow told the crowd Friday at Red Butte Garden as her band played — ironically — "A Change Will Do You Good."
It was a comment on how Crow made the old seem new. She mixed styles, made her obscure songs sound as important as her popular ones and flashed her southern Missouri smile all evening long to give a great performance.
The unpredictability started from the beginning when Crow walked on stage and behind the keyboards for a funky version of "Our Love Is Fading." The number accentuated the two-piece horn section that sounded great in the amphitheater.
Later, Crow played electric guitar and led her band in a rocking crescendo on "Steve McQueen." She also brought her band to the front of the stage to play a gospel-style version of "Long Road Home."
Crow, who also played accordion and piano during the show, unearthed a forgotten gem in the title track to her 2002 album "C’mon C’mon." Later she captured the anguish in "The Difficult Kind" and made the number sound as good as the radio hit that followed it, "If It Makes You Happy."
Crow had a busy afternoon in Salt Lake City, planting a tree in Sugar House Park and later visiting a grocery store. She told the crowd their town was "pretty" and even worked in a short speech about former Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr., who is now running for president.
"I want to see him run a campaign that is clean," Crow said, "because surely to God we can have a campaign that isn’t nasty. I like him."
Crow looked all night like she was having fun. She had a task of boosting the crowd’s energy. The one-man opening act, Paul Jacobsen seemed to be trying to sedate the audience with melancholy songs on his acoustic guitar and banjo.
The audience was slow to respond when she asked for help finishing a lyric on "Can’t Cry Anymore," but the Red Butte crowd performed better later in the show. They clapped to "My Favorite Mistake" and sang with "Soak Up the Sun."
That number kept the pop sound it had when it debuted. During the encore, Crow’s "All I Wanna Do" had a verse of Stealers Wheel’s, "Stuck in the Middle With You."
If there was any hint of complacency in Crow’s show, it was the number of radio hits she played. But fixtures have to provide a sense of the familiar.
Crow succeeded Friday because she provided the familiar and the fresh.

Taylor Swift had the thrill of meeting her idol Shania Twain before June 8's CMT Music Awards, but she wasn't the only young country singer to cross paths with a hero at the event.
“We shared a dressing room with Sheryl Crow, Lady Antebellum and Shania,” says The Band Perry's Kimberly Perry. “Sheryl Crow is like a big hero of mine, and I told her, ‘You know, you kind of helped me learn how to sing,' because I used to learn all of her songs on guitar and I would try to mimic all her vocals.”
And Perry didn’t walk away from Crow empty handed.
“I think there might be a writing session in the future,” she says.

The afternoon before Grammy Award-winning singer Sheryl Crow picked up her guitar to perform in front of thousands fans, she threw on a T-shirt, picked up a shovel, and dug.
Crow helped 50 other TreeUtah volunteers plant trees near a new walking path in Sugarhouse Park, as part of toothpaste company Tom’s of Maine "Bring Back the Natural Beauty" campaign, which aims to beautify parks and gardens around the nation where Crow performs.
Later Friday night, she sung to a sold-out audience at the Red Butte Gardens outdoor concert series.
TreeUtah and Salt Lake County Mayor Corroon’s Million Tree initiative have teamed up to plant trees around the county and on Friday, Crow helped add five trees to the 580,000 already planted since the initiative was launched four years ago. TreeUtah has been planting since 1990; the initiative’s goal is to have the million trees planted by 2017.
Both local groups say planting trees is important to improving health, air quality, and beauty.
Tom’s of Maine also has claimed to "green" Crow’s tour by fueling it with biodiesel, recycling, and conserving energy in other ways.
"I love hearing about Salt Lake’s love for open spaces," said Crow. "We’ve had a great time in different communities being a part of ventures like this."
Mayor Coorron and TreeUtah executive director Amy Collins were excited that Crow and Tom’s of Maine helped at the event because of the exposure it brought.
"It was a wonderful opportunity to show what were doing — we’ve never had someone like Sheryl Crow come out and actually plant with us," said Collins. "We’re out here every day."
Last year, TreeUtah passed out reusable and biodegradable water bottles at a Jack Johnson concert; they were also one of six Utah nonprofits to receive a share of Johnson’s profit on that concert.
But, not even Corroon or Collins could get tickets to Crow’s "100 Miles from Memphis" concert, rumored to have sold out in under 10 minutes; only two lucky TreeUtah volunteers who were chosen in a raffle will get to attend.

To continue, Sonoma Jazz Plus needs a capital investment of $500,000 - just over the amount donated to school music programs over the years - say festival organizers.
After seven seasons of crowd pleasing big-time shows, Sonoma Jazz Plus told business leaders, in an open community meeting Tuesday evening, the festival is on tenuous ground.
"Because of the cost of booking the talent coupled with slow ticket sales, they'll need a certain commitment before they'll move onto the following year," said Darius Anderson, the festival's Sonoma chair.
In short, the festival needs a capital investment of $500,000, which Anderson said say is enough to cover the estimated $200,000 worth of debt accrued by this year's festival, as well as provide an "insurance policy" for the 2012 festival.
The $500,000 figure clocks in at just over $450,000 Sonoma Jazz Plus donated to Sonoma's school music programs since 2005, to keep them alive.
Staff attributes the growing deficit, in part, to reduced ticket sales, which they say have dropped post-2008 by 25-35 percent.
"We're at seven-years, so we're at the absolute tipping point where we either grow and sustain or we...don't," said Jim Horowitz, Sonoma Jazz Plus President and CEO.
Horowitz said more business partnerships, such as the three-year sponsorship agreement the festival holds with Union Bank, are key to raising the funds.
Only 30 percent of the festival costs are funded by tickets, said Horowitz, the remaining 70 percent comes from partnerships. A large cash fund would allow the festival to ramp up their schedule; book talent by November, and allow for a six-month promotional period, rather than three-month period the current financial process allows.
"Please know we're doing a top-for-bottom look at what we can change," said Horowitz, inviting attendees to email their thoughts and questions to festival staff and participate in a festival-focused survey of the business community.
Attendees had their own take on what to change: get rid of the tents, sack the name ("jazz, really?"), bring in better food vendors - or any vendors other than Johnny Garlic's - and invite more community participation.
Community members expressed mixed reactions to the festival's request for a fund infusion.
"As a person who runs a nonprofit, if I can't sustain it I need to change it," said Kathy Witkowicki, the executive director of the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance. "To take $500,000 out of the community, when every other nonprofit is trying to get funds...I just don't get it."
Horowitz confirmed that the festival plans to look outside the Sonoma Valley area, at least in part, for investment deals. This year, Anderson negotiated deals with several large bay area corporations, including AT&T, PG&E and Chevron.
"Sonoma Jazz brings a lot of money to this community," said Marshall Bauer, Jazz Plus board member who's business, Wine Country Party & Events, was also a vendor at this year's festival.
"Just because we have vegetables doesn't mean we don't want meat...we have six or seven thousand people that weekend who wouldn't be here if not for having a 'big engine' nonprofit around," said Bauer.
Still, it's grow or perish for the festival.
"Right now we're still an event, but we'd like to create an institution," said Horowitz.

It is really after watching Miles From Memphis that I have begun to realize exactly how talented ey is. Sheryl Crow’s performance of a number of eir classics – . There are a few bonus features here that further increase the “must-have” quotient of the DVD. Aside from soundcheck versions of “Stop” and “Eye To Eye”, Eagle Rock has also included a behind the scenes section to Miles From Memphis that also does well in decreasing the mystique behind Crow and eir music. The live show surrounds many of the tracks from eir latest album, “100 Miles From Memphis”, interspersing the different album tracks with
The visual quality of Miles From Memphis is simply stunning. While we received the DVD version of the live show, the camera work and transfer of the footage to the DVD format makes for a vibrant and realistic experience.
The backing band present during Miles From Memphis deserves additional ink – where there has never been any issue with regards to the supporting instrumentation on a Crow track, there is an infusion of vitality given each performance by this band.
I would strongly suggest that fans of Crow pick up this DVD, but I would also extend that recommendation to anyone that wishes to see what Sheryl Crow is all about. The blend of old and new tracks will undoubtedly show some rarities that would normally have been forgotten, along with providing viewers with a new context for a great many of their favorite tracks. Check this release out today and see what else Eagle Rock has up their sleeves this summer.

06.22.2011– Grammy Award Winning Artist and Missouri native, Sheryl Crow, will serve as Honorary Chair for the Second Annual LoveU2Pieces Golf Invitational. The tournament will be held at The Country Club at the Legends in Eureka, MO on Sept. 12, 2011. Five local children living with autism will join her as honorary co-chairs.
Autism impacts more than child who is diagnosed, it affects the entire family. LoveU2Pieces is a non-profit organization that helps support families touched by autism by providing respite care, family and community education, and opportunities for connection with other families.

The Mark Twain legacy CD, titled Mark Twain: Words & Music, combines spoken word and music to tell the life story of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. It was created to commemorate 2010 – The Year of Mark Twain – and was produced by Grammy award-winning producer/musician/singer/songwriter Carl Jackson who also wrote some original music for the project and recorded one of his compositions. Profts from the CD will go toward the Museum's endowment fund. It was hoped that the CD would have been ready by Nov. 30, 2010 (the 175th birthday of Sam Clemens), but to accommodate the busy schedules of the generous artists who stepped forward to help with this project. production ran a little longer than anticipated. The story behind the CD
Cindy Lovell, executive director of the Museum, met Carl Jackson when the two were kids. She lived in Pennsylvania, and he was playing banjo with Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys, a top bluegrass band. They became friends and pen-pals. In a few years, Carl found himself playing with Glen Campbell. Cindy and Carl lost touch, but Carl's career in music continued to soar. In 2003 he produced "Livin', Lovin', Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers" as a tribute to Charlie and Ira Louvin. The CD won several Grammy awards and became Cindy's favorite CD. She was still living in Florida in 2005 and trying to think of an innovative way to commemorate The Year of Mark Twain in 2010 and help the Museum when she came up with the idea for this project. Although she hadn't seen or spoken with Carl in more than 30 years, she phoned him and described the project. Carl loved it, and they began planning, meeting in person again for the first time in December 2009. Carl's vast musical experiences resulted in an all-star cast of musicians, singers, and songwriters. Cindy contacted friends who donated the funds necessary to pay for studio time, engineering, etc. After hundreds of hours of phone conversations, traveling, brainstorming, listening to songs, and considering every possible idea, the result of this enduring friendship and "Twain-spiration" is a double-CD (that includes a 40-page booklet containing all of the narrative and song lyrics) of Mark Twain's life - from birth to death - in a completely unique format.

This June 7 DVD/Blu-Ray was filmed last fall, when Sheryl Crow was touring in support of her “100 Miles From Memphis” album. The talented, soulful nine-piece band appeared on the album (Doyle Bramhall II, guitars/backing vocals; Chris Bruce, guitar; Tommy Sims, bass/vocals; Jeff Babko, keyboards; Victor Indrizzo, drums/percussion; Ephraim Owens, trumpet; Shelly Carroll, saxophone; Nayanna Holley and Stephanie Alexander, backing vocalists); and, they’re a tight, impressive live outfit. Sheryl sticks to guitar and keyboards, “using her voice as an instrument,” which means more vocal noodling, sometimes to good effect.
Highlights for me include old favorites “Soak Up the Sun,” “A Change Would Do You Good,” “My Favorite Mistake,” new fave “Our Love is Fading” and a killer cover of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.”
Sheryl Crow fans old and new will enjoy this program.

[NEWS] ALABAMA, BRAD PAISLEY, SHERYL CROW HELP BAMA RISING RAISE OVER $2 MILLION FOR TORNADO BENEFIT

Last night's Bama Rising: A Benefit Concert For Alabama Tornado Recovery concert at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center is being deemed a success on every level, raising an estimated $2.2 million through ticket sales and other charitable efforts surrounding the event.
The concert was organized and produced by Ali Harnell, Nashville-based SVP at AEG Live; Coran Capshaw at Red Light Management; and Gary Weinberger, president of Red Mountain Entertainment. Dave Matthews underwrote production expenses estimated at more than $100,000, and Brad Paisley donated his touring production for the concert. Proceeds benefit the Bama Rising Fund and will be distributed through the Greater Birmingham Community Foundation.
On the bill were Alabama, credited with getting the ball rolling on Bama Rising, along with Rodney Atkins, Dierks Bentley, Bo Bice, Blind Boys of Alabama, Luke Bryan, the Commodores, Sheryl Crow, Sara Evans, Taylor Hicks, Little Big Town, Martina McBride, Montgomery Gentry, David Nail, Jake Owen, Paisley, Kellie Pickler, Darius Rucker, and Ashton Shepherd.
Harnell and Rod Essig and Blake McDaniel at Creative Artists Agency, along with the Red Light team booked the night's talent.
Tickets were $25-$150, with two levels of VIP packages priced at $250 and $1,000, and was "100% clean," Harnell tells billboard.biz. The ticket gross was about $1.3 million, and other initiatives will take the figure for those devastated by the April 27 tornados that ripped through Alabama well over $2 million. "It's really going to help," Harnell says.
The show itself, with performances from artists with Alabama connections or those who just wanted to help, was "phenomenal," Harnell says. "Brad Paisley donated his production, and he's got this incredible video wall and lighting rig, so it was a first class production. There was a house band of Kenny Greenberg, Michael Rhodes and a bunch of other badass Nashville musicians that came over."
Harnell stresses that people can still donate to the cause through bamarising.org and an online auction at charitybuzz.org that has already raised about $25,000 that continues through tomorrow.
One of the things the singer does know he wants to do is tour with friend Sheryl Crow. The two have a duet that is currently crossing genres at radio. 'Collide,' with its accompanying video shot in Nashville, is their second musical pairing. The first was the Top 10 hit 'Picture,' released in 2002. 'Collide' from Kid Rock's album 'Born Free,' also features rock icon Bob Seger on piano.
Kid and Sheryl begin their tour in July, and while they'll each do their own shows, they'll also perform their duets and possibly some additional music.
"The thing with me and Sheryl, we do our songs and then she likes to rock as much as I do," the singer explains. "We don't need to rehearse, we can just pick a song and go out there and see where it goes. I know for sure we'll do that whether it's good or not. That's the element people want to see -- heart and real music -- when they come to a show."

[NEWS] SOLD-OUT RELIEF CONCERT RAISES MONEY, HOME IN ALABAMA

Opening with chilling video of a killer tornado and a prayer, country superstars Alabama headlined a sold-old concert Tuesday night to raise money for storm relief and remind people that thousands across their home state are still hurting from the physical and emotional damage left by the nation's worst tornado outbreak in decades.
Accompanied by a church choir and the symphony orchestra from hard-hit Tuscaloosa, members of the renowned band from Fort Payne had the crowd of 13,000 standing from the start with favorites like "Dixieland Delight" and a new song written by bassist Teddy Gentry called "Alabama Rising." The recording goes on sale Wednesday morning on iTunes, with proceeds to benefit a relief fund for storm survivors.
"Raising Alabama only takes three: The good Lord, you and me," sang Alabama frontman Randy Owen, a hand raised skyward.
Alabama was only one draw on a bill that included 18 more acts from rocker Sheryl Crow to gospel greats The Blind Boys of Alabama, who opened with a soulful version of "Amazing Grace."
The show, called Bama Rising, was staged just a few miles from ravaged communities where nearly two dozen people died in the twisters of April 27. Officials say 241 people were killed in Alabama alone, and thousands more lost their homes. Across the South the storms left more than 300 dead.
Waiting on the music to begin, Julie Kreutz of Hoover said she was happy to pay $75 each for floor seats for her parents and 6-year-old daughter.
"If it will help someone get a roof over their head, that's fine," said Kreutz. She grew up in Walker County, where nine people died in the twisters.
Holding a small Alabama flag and wearing a "One for Y'all" T-shirt sold to raise money for storm assistance, Children's Hospital nurse Katherine Kent recalled treating some of the 60 bloody, battered storm victims who flooded the emergency room the night of the tornadoes.
"That's why I'm here, to support them," said Kent.
The members of Alabama took it personally when dozens of twisters roared across their state, leaving a trail of destruction more than 600 miles long. Before long they were on the phone, talking about ways to help.
"We just said, `We've got to do something. It was just a consensus," Owen said in an interview with The Associated Press before the concert.
As they called friends in the music business, ideas for a benefit show came together quickly. Guitar player Jeff Cook said he worried about people forgetting about the devastation of that awful day.
"The weather is better and people tend to forget unless they are directly affected," Cook said. "So it's important that we tell the rest of the people who were luckier in that situation that the need is not over."
A rush of support poured into Alabama in the tornadoes' aftermath, but some organizations are now reporting fewer volunteers and dwindling donations.
Bama Rising, however, sold out quickly except for a few $1,000 VIP packages. Proceeds will go through the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham to a new Bama Rising fund established for relief statewide.
Owen, Cook and bassist Teddy Gentry said they would serve on a board to help distribute concert proceeds for tornado relief, and they are looking for other ways to help. Natives of northeast Alabama who are still based in Fort Payne, they say they are particularly interested in helping in rural areas hit by the storms.
The band members said the tornadoes spared them as individuals, but their home county and neighbors were slammed.
"For us, it's a matter of continuing to go out long after this concert," said Gentry. "This is just a drop in the bucket compared to what we need. Things we can do individually or as a group, we're going to be doing that."
Alabama - minus longtime drummer Mark Herndon, who is touring with country singer Leah Seawright - planned a finale that featured all the acts including country singers Rodney Atkins, Brad Paisley and Martina McBride; R&B legends the Commodores; and others.
Atkins already has performed at two concerts for tornado relief, but he said he didn't hesitate when his management company contacted him about Bama Rising and the chance to perform alongside Alabama. The members of the Country Music Hall of Fame have had 42 No. 1 singles and sold more than 73 million records in three decades.
"The group Alabama is one of the biggest reasons I got into country music," Atkins said in an interview before the concert. "I listened to their music over and over, coming up. It is such a huge honor to be included in this."
Atkins and other acts are paying their own expenses to make sure the maximum amount goes to tornado relief.
"Hopefully we can relieve some of the stress that goes with going through such a tumultuous situation that turns lives upside down," he said. "It's the least we can do."
Other artists on the bill included Dierks Bentley; homegrown American Idol contestants Bo Bice and Taylor Hicks; Luke Bryan; Sara Evans, Little Big Town, Montgomery Gentry, David Nail, Jake Owen; Kellie Pickler, Darius Rucker and Ashton Shepherd.
Owen said even more acts volunteered to participate.

TreeUtah will have a tree-planting event in Salt Lake City on Friday, June 24. TreeUtah’s mission is to improve Utah’s quality of life for present and future generations by enhancing the environment through tree planting, stewardship and education.
The event is in Sugar House Park. The newly planted trees will be along the new citywide bike trail. The event is from 1 - 3 p.m. and volunteers will need to go to http://treeutah.org/ to register or call 801-364-2122. All they need to do is help plant a tree.

Sheryl Crow has been on the music scene for quite some time. It's easy to forget how accomplished the woman is; she's had quite a collection of hits over the years. Sheryl Crow: Miles from Memphis - Live at the Pantages Theatre is a nice fresher course.
The concert was filmed at the glamorous Hollywood venue in the fall of 2010, while Crow was touring to support her album, 100 Miles From Memphis. Featuring over two hours of music, the show includes several tracks from that album, as well as mega-hits "Every Day is a Winding Road," "If It Makes You Happy," and "All I Wanna Do." Crow also manages to mix things up by adding in Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" and the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back."
Admittedly, I wasn't a Crow fan before this release, and I'm still not. However, I have to respect this woman's catalog, her talent, and her showmanship. Fans will absolutely love this show from beginning to end. The girl's still got it!
Miles from Memphis offers a variety of camera angles, allowing the viewer to catch the concert action from various spots on the stage. This is good and bad for the image. Because the cameras shift a lot, there's a lot of auto focus and a few soft shots. On-stage lighting effects also hinder the whole thing from being a clearer experience. However, this is all the way the event was filmed, and really has nothing to do with the quality of the 1.78:1 transfer. That lighting, however, does inject a few interesting colors into the image, mainly red, purple and green. When the camera gets a hold of Crow, there is some decent detail, showing her flyaway strands of hair and decent facial details. The one thing that was missing was beads of sweat. Impressive!
On my Blu-ray player, this release defaulted to the 2-channel PCM track. Make sure you go in and fix that! The PCM track is fine for a stereo mix, as is the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track. However, the DTS-HD Master Audio track offers the most bang for your buck, offering a bolder, more immersive "front-row" experience, with excellent dynamics. It can be a little hard to decipher some of Crowe's on-stage chatter, but overall sound quality is excellent, allowing listeners to pick out guitars, keyboards and other instruments. The crowd gets nice surround representation as well, without ever overpowering the band.
The solo featurette offers a behind the scenes look at the live show, with Crow talking up the venue, her band, and the experience of creating a live performance. At almost 19 minutes, it's slow moving and Crow is a bit of a "low talker," but it's a good addition to this type of release.
You may be Miles from Memphis, but this release puts you right in the front row of the Pantages Theatre. It's a wonderful Blu-ray with exceptionally stellar sound. If you missed Sheryl Crowe's 2010 tour, this is just the ticket.

2011 CMT Awards host Kid Rock handles the gig in a way where he doesn’t take himself too seriously. That’s probably why he is so effective at steering this ship and was brought back for a second year. The singer earned his keep, though, pulling double duty by performing ‘Collide’ with Sheryl Crow, in what was a quiet, tender moment smack dab in the middle of the show.
Up until this point, the CMT Awards had been upbeat and twangy, but Kid Rock and Crow turned the tables a bit and dosed the show with a sensitive duet. The twosome will spend the summer touring together, so maybe this performance will serve as a pre-amble of things to come on the road!
The pair sat perched atop stools on the stage, turned into each other. Kid Rock wore a backwards trucker cap and jeans, while the leggy Crow looked fresh in a crisp white shirt. It’s their opposite looks and styles that make their duets so compelling and believable. They enjoy that whole yin and yang thing when they perform. Both have toed the line in multiple genres throughout their careers, with Kid Rock trafficking in rap, rock and country, and Crow pogo-ing between rock, country, pop or some variation of the three … and that’s why we can’t look away when they ‘Collide.’

Like any good vocalist Crow loves to be surrounded by intuitive players. Her band at this show is exceptional and the section of Tommy Simms on bass, drummer Victor Indrizzo and guitarist Chris Bruce are cohesive but not afraid to extend the groove machine for the purpose of bumping up the tracks.
In fact it should be said Crow and the band get heavy duty spiritual in some of the extended pieces
A lot of the highlights on this blu-ray are on new tracks like Our Love is Fading, the well written title track, and the slow burn of Sideways.
Guitarist Doyle Bramhall 11 is on board and a joy to watch.
His presence and groove is like glue.
In some small instances on the 5.1 mix I wish his solo guitar lines were mixed a little higher in volume. It’s a minor quip, because most of the time it”s fine and the band is in flames.
A lot of Crow’s hit material like A Change Would Do You Good and Every Day is a Winding Road has been funkified and retooled
The concert takes on those tracks may throw the audience at first. But the format is loose and juicy like Exile era Stones and Otis Redding road bands. This where the band/artist let the audience take them to another place.

[GOSSIP] CROW'S PANTS STEAL THE SHOW AT CMTs
Taylor Swift won the biggest prize at a country music awards bash, but it was Sheryl Crow's underwear that provided the night's biggest talking point.
Sheryl, sitting on a stool in a short white skirt to duet with Kid Rock, briefly flashed the camera as she stood up at the CMT (Country Music Television) awards - prompting a viral sensation on Twitter.
The All I Wanna Do singer acknowledged the moment about an hour later when she and musician Sara Evans presented a gong.
"Well, at least you were wearing underwear," Sara told Sheryl.
"I was wearing underwear because I'm good, clean, wholesome family fun," the star joked.
Taylor won video of the year for her song Mine thanks to her fans. Meanwhile, The House that Built Me singer Miranda Lambert took female video of the year and her new husband, Blake Shelton, was the night's only multiple winner.
Taylor joined Shania Twain for their pre-recorded faux movie trailer recreating Thelma and Louise that included guest appearances by Donald Trump and Kenny Rogers.
Near the end of the show, fans audibly gasped as Twain slipped and fell on her way to the stage to make an introduction.
And Justin Bieber induced tears from teenagers as he walked the red carpet with Rascal Flatts. The pair took home best collaboration for That Should Be Me.

CMT Music Awards review: Blake Shelton won, Shania Twain slipped, Sheryl Crow flashed: Who says country award shows are dull?

Some of my TV critic colleagues chided tonight’s CMT Music Awards show before it even aired, suggesting there are too many country-music awards shows. Cynics! Me, I can’t get enough of ‘em. They’re an easy way to keep up with what’s selling in the country industry, they toss up odd couplings (gosh, I didn’t know the least appealing-looking group in country music, Rascal Flatts, had done a duet with pop music’s designated cutie, Justin Bieber — glad I do now!), and in general these shows provide a safe haven for 1970s/’80-style singer-songwriter-soft-rock in the current century.
There were unexpected moments. Shania Twain took a spill, slipping to the floor while taking the stage to announce the “Male Video of the Year” winner. (Blake Shelton won.) Poor Shania — as though her rattled confidence hasn’t been chronicled all too vividly on her OWN channel variety show.
Overall, the corny quotient was endearing. The show’s opening, a Thelma & Louise parody with Taylor Swift and Shania Twain taking over the starring roles, was delightfully silly. Groups such as Lady Antebellum, The Band Perry, Thompson Square, and (among my current favorites, deprived of much camera-time this night) The JaneDear Girls are making cleverly crafted hits, cheerfully disposable pop-country. It’s big-tent music, able to accomodate the affably awkward rapping of Colt Ford as well as a duet that paired Ludacris with Jason Aldean, plus a Lady Antebellum cover of Prince’s “Kiss.”
One missed opportunity: Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina 9:45 introduced Sugarland’s performance, but it was clear from the tumultuous greeting the Idols received that people also wanted to see McReery and Alaina perform, too. But Sugarland did not disappoint for spectacle and music, as Jennifer Nettles spray painted a white flag with the word “LOVE,” and turning the “O” into a peace sign.
Sara Evans and Sheryl Crow introduced Lady Antebellum. Earlier, she’d performed her duet with Kid Rock, “Collide,” earlier, dressed in a mini-skirt. With Evans, she paused to preface their intro by saying, “People are tweeting that when I stood up from the stool, my underwear was showing.” Evans said, “At least you were wearing underwear.” Crow asserted, “I am good clean family entertainment,” thereby guaranteeing some frantic freeze-framing of the underwear flash among viewers at home.
In general, the CMT show was a lot of fun, at once firmly organized in the tradition of the Nashville music industry, yet able to accomodate spontaneous moments.

Press Release - Singer Sheryl Crow helped cheer up sick children in a Memphis, Tennessee hospital on Tuesday May 31 by making cupcakes with the youngsters.
The All I Wanna Do hitmaker visited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of the Music Gives to St. Jude Kids initiative, aimed at raising money and awareness in the fight against childhood cancer.
Mum-of-two Crow visited the medical centre on Tuesday and posted a photo of her with a young boy proudly showing off his decorated treat on her Facebook.com page.
In a post alongside the snap, she writes, "Making cupcakes with Hutch at St. Jude Children's Hospital, initiating 'Music Gives to St. Jude Kids'."
The hospital received a cash boost last month (May11) when country singer John Rich donated his $250,000 (£156,000) prize money from U.S. reality TV show Celebrity Apprentice to the facility.
