Hunger Action Month, led by Feeding America this September, is the nationwide effort to mobilize the public in the fight against hunger in America. Formed to help those in need, the event has bloomed from a day of service into a month-long campaign as the economy has taken a turn for the worse and the demand for food assistance has increased.
Through collaboration between Feeding America's national office, their network of 205 food banks, corporate sponsors and engagement of celebrities, Feeding America aims to raise awareness this September to help the 36 million Americans who struggle with hunger through the universal message "Give a Little, Feed a Lot."
Throughout September, Feeding America's nationwide network of 205 food banks are calling upon their communities to take action by giving up something small through the "Give A Little, Feed a Lot" campaign. By identifying small things in life, a person can see what the value of that item would translate into meals and can then donate the value to their local food bank. Americans are encouraged to participate in the month by attending local food banks events, donating time, money or their voice, participating in one of many corporate promotions and getting children involved as "Hunger Helpers."
[LIVE REVIEW] JAMES TAYLOR AND FRIENDS @ TANGLEWOOD - AUG 29 (BOSTON.COM)

LENOX - There’s a line in James Taylor’s song “That’s Why I’m Here’’ where he expresses his gratitude to fans who “pay good money to hear ‘Fire and Rain’ again and again and again.’’
Friday night at Tanglewood those fans came out in droves, braving the nasty elements, to hear that classic and many others in the centerpiece concert of a five-day celebration of the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter’s career, which benefited the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
In the first of the two shows featuring his skilled big band and special guests Sheryl Crow and Yo-Yo Ma, Taylor did not disappoint.
Although he has reached the age where lifetime achievement-type accolades have become more common than hit songs, Taylor remains a vibrant, playful, and reflective entertainer. Even if the tempos, expertly kept by Steve Gadd, are starting to slow down a bit, that familiar warm embrace of a voice is reassuringly strong and his intricate acoustic finger-picking pristine.
Beside him, Crow and Ma’s gifts were expertly deployed both together and separately.
In addition to singing back-up and duet vocals on songs like “Mexico,’’ “How Sweet It Is,’’ and “Fire and Rain,’’ Crow took center stage for a clutch of her own tunes throughout the night. Her presence injected a welcome measure of urgent rock energy into the evening with songs like “If It Makes You Happy’’ and “Hard to Make a Stand’’ as well as the aching acoustic ballad “Wildflower.’’ An unabashed fan, Crow joked, “I could get used to having James Taylor sing backup for me.’’ Ma added gorgeous, melancholy colors with his cello to several Taylor tunes including “You’ve Got a Friend’’ and the pair were simpatico on a gentle duet of Schumann’s “Träumerei.’’
While he stuck mainly to the hits, Taylor cherry-picked tunes from his 41-year career, reaching back for the early gem “Blossom.’’ (Alas, Mother Nature didn’t heed the lyric to “send the sunshine’’ as it rained steadily, and increasingly heavily, on those seated on the lawn.)
During a lively panel discussion on Saturday with Crow and composer John Williams, Taylor spoke of using music as a cure for what ailed him as an angst-ridden adolescent. It was clear from Taylor’s grins Friday night that the cure is still working.
The five-day event was the brainchild of Taylor’s wife, Caroline “Kim’’ Taylor, a BSO trustee and former marketing director, who joined her husband’s quartet of backing vocalists for several songs Friday night.
The festival had several other elements including a concert Thursday night at Ozawa Hall. At that show Taylor presided over a splendid celebration of his less well-known songs and his stalwart backing band, with almost each member getting a solo spotlight with Taylor delightedly serving as a backing musician or vocalist.

LENOX - It's a good thing James Taylor put "Shower the People" relatively early in his set list Friday because anything later might have seemed downright cruel.
Taylor, with his special guests Sheryl Crow and Yo-Yo Ma, played to what he called "soggy umbrella nation" Friday, managing his best through a drenching rain before a sellout crowd as part of his perennial summer stop at Tanglewood.
This year is a step beyond past years however, as Taylor played the venue for five consecutive nights, utilizing different musical configurations, from an informal percussion class to a night of conversation, performances with his band as well as collaborations with John Williams and the Boston Pops.
He was extremely comfortable in Friday's full band setting, which allowed him to play material from throughout his career as well as occasionally just step back and be a backing musician for Crow and Ma.
"JT" opened with "Secret o' Life," revealing quickly that the secret is "enjoying the passage of time" and it is clear he is not getting alarmed about the aging process. His voice is as warm as ever and he sparkled early on with selections like the classic "The Water is Wide," as well as strong, full band workouts on "Copperline," and "Carolina in My Mind," the latter which featured five backing vocalists including his longtime accompanist Arnold McCuller and his wife Kim Taylor.
After touring for several years in his sparse "One Man Band" show, Taylor has once again got a mighty cast working with him, including drummer Steve Gadd , keyboardist Larry Goldings, percussionist Luis Conte and horn player Lou Marini, among others.
After "Shower the People," Taylor brought out Crow, who played electric bass on her own "My Favorite Mistake," prior to Taylor's classic "Mexico."
After a brief intermission, Taylor returned to kick in with the sizzling "Traffic Jam," before bringing the renowned classical cellist Ma on stage with him. After a brief Schumann piece, they turned in a duo version of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend," and were soon joined by Crow for Taylor's breakthrough song "Fire and Rain," as well as Crow's "Wildflower," forming a most impressive trio in the process.
Latter set standouts with the entire band included Crow's gritty "If It Makes You Happy," and "Strong Enough," as well as a royally rocking, horn-backed "Hard to Make a Stand," Taylor's interpretation of the 1950's standard "Up on the Roof," and a ferocious "Steamroller Blues."
As the show wound down, Taylor definitely played the part of crowd pleaser, turning in hits that included a joyous version of "Your Smiling Face," the Motown cover "How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved By You)," and encores that included "Mockingbird" - with Crow taking over the vocal part once sung by Taylor's ex-wife Carly Simon - and Crow's own signature song, "All I Wanna Do."
